Back when I first saw Star Trek: Nemesis, I was pretty disturbed by the resolution of Data's death. He transfers his memories into B-4, and then the ending hints that his memories might take over B-4's mind, and then Data will be back. The problem with that is that while B-4 is not as smart as Data, he's still a person. Treating B-4 as less important than Data because he's less smart has some troubling implications for how the writers feel about real life people who have mental disabilities. Having B-4 die just so someone smarter can come back to life? It has a bad subtext.

But recently I learned that the TNG novels solved this problem by having Data come back without sacrificing B-4, so that they both get to live! So Right now I'm reading the novel where Data comes back, The Persistence of Memory by David Mack. There's some stuff I don't get because I haven't read any other TNG novels (besides Imzadi), but it's mostly understandable, and I've found it pretty enjoyable so far. Near the beginning of the book there's a thrilling chase sequence that really had me eagerly turning pages!

I'm in the middle of re-watching DS9, but I might have to watch some of my favorite Data episodes from TNG. Back in the day I went through a huge Data phase, but over the years my focus shifted to other characters, like Jadzia Dax. Maybe it's time to revisit my favorite android!

OH, and also, I've decided I absolutely must attend Star Trek Las Vegas next year. I've never been in all my years of being a Trekkie ... I gotta make it this time!
